Sports

Most sporting activity took place at Vaillant park which was on St. Remi street between Pullman street and the St. Remi viaduct. The main activity was hockey in the winter and baseball or softball in the summer. The park was supervised by pere Lacelles, and Tony Mancini. These two were famous for their prise du parc Vaillant. As the park was adjacent to the CNR Turcot yards roundhouse, sporting activities at the parc were sometimes interrupted by the heavy amount of smoke that was released from the roundhouse when the CNR were cleaning out the steam engines smokestacks. Ladies who had just hung out their freshly washed clothes would curse the CNR because the smoke would soil the clothes. Air pollution was not a big issue in those days.
